Platypus (Scientific Name:Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of the rareegg‑layingmammals that breathe with lungs and inhabit the eastern regions ofAustralia andTasmania. It belongs to the suborder Prototheria, the order Monotremata, and the family Ornithorhynchidae, within the genus Ornithorhynchus (Scientific Name:Ornithorhynchus), and is theonly species within this genus. When the first platypus specimen was sent to a museum, its bizarre appearance led Europeanbiologists to believe it was a hoax—some kind of creature crafted by humans to fool people. The platypus is among the few venomous mammals; male platypuses possess sharp spurs on their hind legs that can secrete toxic substances. It is also one of the rare mammals capable of detecting electromagnetic fields. The platypus’s unique characteristics have made it a key subject of study inevolutionary biology.
