This is my “Wisdom” series—“Wisdom Night Heron.”

The night heron is a species of heron found almost throughout the country. It gets its name from its habit of soaring and calling at night. Its eyes are blood-red, and during the breeding season its plumage in northern regions changes to a bluish-green, with two long white plumes growing on the back of its neck. Birdwatchers affectionately call it the “Night Master.”

It can serve as a small desk ornament: when work isn’t going well, when your boss makes an odd request, or when your computer crashes, simply gazing at its wise expression can help calm your nerves. It can also be displayed on a family shelf, adding emotional warmth and charm to the home atmosphere.
