The Griffin is a legendary creature that combines the body of a lion with the distinctive features of an eagle, commonly found in both ancient Akkadian and Greek mythology—where it was often depicted pulling the chariots of gods like Zeus and Apollo. Its origins can be traced back to the ancient Babylonian–Assyrian myth of Marduk slaying a monstrous beast, and through Greek cultural transmission, the Griffin eventually made its way to Europe, with its name evolving from the Greek word “grups” and the Latin term “gryphus.” Typically measuring 2–3 meters in length with a wingspan reaching up to 8 meters, the Griffin boasts extraordinary vision and acute hearing, enabling it to spot prey on the ground from great altitudes. Different cultures have offered varied interpretations of its appearance: in “Dungeons & Dragons,” its fur is said to change color with age, while the third edition introduces a wolf-like tail; in “Grimm’s Fairy Tales,” its plumage is described as a sun‑drenched golden brown. The Griffin primarily feeds on herbivores and possesses dual hunting capabilities—swift aerial dives combined with stealthy ground movements—and practices monogamy throughout its lifetime. Young griffins undergo six months of rigorous flight training before they are fully capable of independent hunting. As a quintessential element of fantasy literature and gaming, games like “Heroes of Might and Magic” and “World of Warcraft” depict the Griffin as a trainable mount—but taming one is extremely challenging: fledglings must begin training within three months, and adult Griffins fiercely resist captivity and consume astonishing amounts of food. Their nests are often studded with precious gems, and with a lifespan potentially spanning several centuries, the Griffin is renowned in legend for embodying both the role of a guardian of treasure and that of a cunning thief.
