Hoopla is a traditional game cherished by the Chinese people. Originally, hoopla was nothing more than a simple pastime enjoyed for fun, often employed by street vendors as part of their commercial activities. In the past, players would set up displays featuring boxes of cigarettes, clay figurines, glass teacups, small mirrors, tiny toys, candies, and other assorted items. Participants would stand several meters away from the display, holding a loop in one hand and carefully aiming to toss it over the designated line—outside the rope—to land around the prize they coveted. Most participants were children; they’d first pay a small fee—usually just a few cents per loop—to purchase their loops. Once armed with a loop, players would step back, take aim at their desired prize, and fling the loop toward the target. If the loop successfully encircled the item, the prize became the player’s to keep.

In the past, loop games would display boxes of cigarettes, mud dolls, glass teacups, small mirrors, small toys, candies, and other items. Participants would pull a rope several meters away from these items and must throw a loop outside the rope. Many people who want to participate in this game are children. First, pay to buy a circle, with each additional one or two cents. After obtaining the circle, stand outside the rope, aim at what you want, and throw the circle. If caught, the item belongs to the thrower.
