The magpie perches sideways atop a diagonally extending plum branch, its form plump and full, with long, ribbon‑like tail feathers. Its head is slightly tilted upward, the tip of its beak gently parted, and its piercing gaze fixed high and to the left—as if on the verge of singing out a joyful call, capturing a vivid and lifelike pose.
The feather textures are rendered through densely packed, fine linear detailing and scale‑like openwork, with clearly defined layers in the wing feathers and gracefully flowing, elongated arcs outlining the tail feathers.
The plum branch twists and turns with bold, dynamic curves, while several five‑petal plum blossoms adorn its tips—some still in bud, others in full bloom—forming the classic auspicious motif of “magpies chattering among the plum branches,” symbolizing “joyful news at one’s doorstep.”
Secondary motifs: Scattered across the empty spaces of the composition are intricate, openwork patterns such as twining vine motifs and ruyi cloud heads, which not only fill compositional gaps but also echo the magpie’s lively, fluid grace with their curvilinear rhythms.
