Modular DIY Aerodynamics Glider 🛩️🔧
Build, cover and tune your own glider! This modular DIY design was created as both a stable long-distance glider and a practical platform for learning the basic principles of aerodynamics.
The positions of the wing and tail assembly can be changed at any time, allowing you to experiment with balance, stability and flight characteristics. Modify the setup, perform test flights and discover how every adjustment affects the glider! 🧪🌬️

📦 Required Materials
In addition to the printed parts, you will need:
- 2 × 6 × 6 mm square profiles, each 60 cm long, for the wing
- 1 × 6 × 6 mm square profile, at least 80 cm long, for the fuselage
- Lightweight covering film
- CA glue / super glue
- Optional ballast weights measuring 18 × 10 mm
The included files also contain a compatible ballast holder. You can install as many weights or holders as required to achieve the correct balance.
🪶 Lightweight Tail — LW-PLA Vase Mode
The horizontal and vertical tail surfaces can be printed from LW-PLA using Vase Mode.
This provides several important advantages:
- Extremely low weight at the end of the long fuselage
- Less ballast required in the nose
- Easier center-of-gravity adjustment
- Lower overall flying weight
- Improved glide efficiency
- Reduced filament consumption
- Fast and simple printing
Reducing the tail weight is especially valuable because even a few extra grams at the end of the long fuselage can require significantly more ballast in the nose. A lightweight tail helps keep the complete glider efficient and well balanced. ⚖️
🪽 Wing Assembly
The complete wing consists of 40 numbered sections:
- Parts 1–20 for one wing side
- Parts 21–40 for the opposite wing side
The reference images show the correct order and orientation of every section.
- Arrange the parts according to their numbers.
- Slide each section onto the 6 × 6 mm square profile.
- Carefully align every section before gluing.
- Secure each section with a small drop of CA glue.
- Cover the completed structure with lightweight film.
Take your time during alignment—the final wing shape has a major influence on flight performance.
⚖️ Setup and Experimentation
Begin with the wing and tail positions shown in the reference photos. Perform gentle test glides over soft grass and make only small adjustments between flights.
You can experiment with:
- Wing position
- Tail position
- Center of gravity
- Ballast amount
- Stability and glide distance
This is more than just a printable glider—it is a hands-on aerodynamics laboratory! 🚀📚
⚠️ Safety: Test the glider in a large open area, away from people, roads, buildings and power lines.
