Basic Overview
Located within the Great Mercy and Benevolence Temple in the Yanta District of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China; construction began in the third year of the Yonghui era of the Tang Dynasty (652 AD), under the supervision of the eminent monk Xuanzang. Originally a five-story structure, it was expanded to seven stories during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian and later faced with brickwork during the Ming Dynasty, giving it its current appearance. In 1961, it was designated as one of the first batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units, and in 2014 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an–Tianshan Corridor site.
