《The Ash Blade’s First Glint》

It’s 2187, on the frayed edge of the Orion Arm—where scrap scavengers like Kael pick over the bones of old war mechs for a meal. He’d dug this chunk of matte-gray alloy from the chestplate of a rusted Sentinel-7 frame, its angular, armor-plated shape too sharp to just melt down.

Kael filed the jagged edges into a double-edged point, carved grip textures into the bulk of it, and called it “Ash Blade”—for the dust that caked every scrap he dragged home. It wasn’t a blaster, but in the tight, zero-g corridors of derelict freighters, a quiet, sturdy blade hit harder.

Last cycle, when a band of raiders cornered him in a cargo hold, their plasma pistols sputtering (thanks to the hold’s fried power grid), Kael’s Ash Blade did the work. Its rigid, mech-forged spine split a raider’s cheap combat knife like glass; the angular hilt locked into his palm so tight he didn’t fumble when a fist swung his way.

Now it sits on his tactical pack, dusted with the red grit of the last planet he picked over—less a weapon, more a badge: proof that the scrap you save might just save you.
