We designed a new 3D Sculpture made up of 100 pyramids, which resembles the shape of water when it falls into a drop 💧. This time too, each pyramid is unique, is numbered on the bottom face from 0 to 99 and has a different shape that follows a mathematical formula in space.

How to glue pyramids to the frame?

Some of you asked me how to glue the pyramids onto the frame. I opted for a drop of silicone (very little is needed).

Print & Installation suggestions

Printing is very easy, I suggest you clean the plate well to avoid adhesion problems. You can scale the model without any problems. For the final composition I suggest you use a frame (check this frame). Take advantage of the light points in the room where you will hang the frame, you will have a beautiful final effect.

Mathematical Background

To create the "drop in water" effect I thought of some symmetrical geometric formulas. I started with 100 pyramids, all the same. Then I moved the 100 vertices in 3 dimensions (x, y, and z) following this formula:

  • x = abs(x-5); abs means absolute value and is symmetrical about the center
  • y = abs(x-5); abs means absolute value and is symmetrical about the center
  • z = (x-5/10)^4+(y-5/10)^4; power an even number is symmetrical

As you can see I always subtract by 5 (the pyramids are on a 10x10 grid) because I wanted to have the centre of symmetry in the middle.

How to align the pyramids

Each pyramid, numbered from 0 to 99, occupies a specific place. Here's what the grid looks like from above (first screenshot), and the grid from below (second screenshot).
