The XM-09 Hellbeetle is an experimental close-combat mobile suit developed in the shadows of the One Year War. Unlike the mass-produced Zaku or GM, the Hellbeetle was designed not for battlefields but for elimination. Built by a rogue engineer The Lightning, defectors and black market technicians, its insectoid design allowed it to infiltrate colonies and derelict warships where standard mobile suits would struggle to maneuver.

Its compact, hunched frame and four-limbed gait gave it terrifying agility in confined spaces. The Hellbeetle could cling to colony walls, move silently through wreckage, and strike with blinding speed. Outfitted with plasma vibro-blades hidden in its arm units, retractable mono-mandibles in the head, and a thorax-mounted beam stinger, it earned its name for the brutal precision with which it dispatched targets.

Unaligned with either Zeon or the Federation after the war, the Hellbeetle became infamous in the hands of rogue mercenaries and assassins. Whispers spread through the colonies of entire squads vanishing without a sound, their mobile suits carved apart as if by some monstrous insect. Pilots unlucky enough to face it often reported only a flash of glowing eyes and the shriek of tearing metal before being silenced forever.

By UC 0090, the Hellbeetle was regarded as a phantom mobile suit; never officially recorded in battle logs, but feared as an assassin’s machine that blurred the line between weapon and nightmare.
