Introduction: The Luxury and Symbolism of the Qian Gong Ba Bu Bed
In the late Ming Dynasty, it was customary in the Jiangnan region to prepare a special dowry item for daughters before they reached marriageable age: the Qian Gong Ba Bu Bed. This bed was exceedingly luxurious—only affluent families could afford it—and some even began crafting it when their daughters were just born, as a way to showcase the family’s wealth and status.
The Ba Bu Bed features a complex structure, including not only a sleeping platform but also amenities such as a toilet, dressing table, cabinets, and more, allowing a young girl to handle all her daily routines within this single piece of furniture. A five-compartment Ba Bu Bed represents nearly the upper limit of its design: the first and second compartments display antique calligraphy and paintings; the third houses books; the fourth serves as a space for grooming and changing clothes; and the fifth is reserved exclusively for sleeping. The Qian Gong Ba Bu Bed accompanied girls throughout their childhood and was also taken into the husband’s home as part of the bridal trousseau. Some even took pride in never leaving the bed for the rest of their lives.

Overall assembly involves gluing and fitting components together; drawers are designed to be detachable and slide into corresponding grooves, making the assembly process quite straightforward.
