The model faithfully recreates the mixed-use layout of the arcade buildings—residential units above shops, with storefronts at ground level and storage areas in the rear. The continuous “arcade corridor” (wǔqiáo jī) on the ground floor is a hallmark of Lingnan architecture, providing shade and shelter from the rain while adapting to the region’s humid, rainy climate. The design retains key elements of the arcade, such as Baroque-style pediments and arched window grilles, while also incorporating traditional Lingnan architectural motifs like pot-ear walls and plastered roof ridges, perfectly capturing the unique charm of “East-meets-West.” Details such as wall reliefs, eave decorations, and balustrade lines have been simplified to ensure printability while still preserving the building’s texture and visual depth, resulting in a functional yet visually appealing white-printed model.

Originating in the late Qing and early Republican periods in Lingnan’s trading ports, the arcade buildings represent a fusion of Western architectural forms introduced by overseas Chinese and indigenous vernacular building wisdom. They stand as a testament to Lingnan’s commercial culture and evoke the everyday life and vibrant street scenes that once thrived beneath their covered walkways. This set of models condenses the essence of century-old arcade architecture into a compact scale, paying homage to the aesthetic principles of Lingnan architecture while providing an ideal base for hand-painting and scene-building.
