📜 History: From the Aristocracy to DIY Enthusiasts
For a long time, people believed the romantic legend that retrievers descended from Russian circus dogs. The truth, however, is a bit more “Scottish”:
Scottish origins: The breed was developed by Lord Tweedmouth (Dudley Marjoribanks) in the mid-19th century at his estate, Guisachan, in Scotland.
Founders of the Lineage: It all began in 1864, when the lord purchased the only yellow puppy from a litter of otherwise black retrievers from a cobbler. His name was Nous. He later crossed him with a female named Belle, who was a Tweed Water Spaniel—a breed now extinct.
Genetic mix: To achieve the perfect hunting dog, the lord gradually added an Irish Setter and a Bloodhound to the breeding program (for a better sense of smell).
Breed recognition: They were not officially recognized as “Golden Retrievers” until 1920.
This figurine captures that very “friendly expression” for which Lord Tweedmouth loved them so much!
