   The Former Residence of Hu Xueyan is located on Yuanbao Street, in the eastern part of the Dajing Lane Historical and Cultural Preservation Area along Hefang Street in Hangzhou. It was built in the eleventh year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1872), precisely during the peak of Hu Xueyan’s career. The construction of this grand mansion took three years and was completed in 1875. Upon completion, it stood as a stunning residence that seamlessly blended traditional Chinese architectural features with distinct Western influences. The entire complex stretches north–south and east–west, covering an area of 10.8 mu, with a total floor space of 5,815 square meters. Whether in terms of its architecture or the exquisite materials and furnishings inside, this residence is widely regarded as the most opulent private estate among China’s leading merchants at the end of the Qing Dynasty.
