Chinese-Style Garden Rockery

Chinese-style garden rockery is the “backbone” of classical gardens, using stones to represent mountains and achieving grandeur through small scale. It emphasizes the four aesthetic principles of slenderness, wrinkling, perforation, and translucency, creating the artistic conception of a miniature mountain forest within a confined space. It also serves as the central landscaping element in courtyards, bonsai, and miniature landscapes.

Common Stone Materials

  • Taihu Stone: warm and smooth with numerous pores and graceful, flowing lines; a classic and mainstream choice for traditional gardens.

  • Lingbi Stone: deep color and exceptionally hard; produces a resonant sound when struck, with a robust and imposing character.

  • Ying Stone: slender, rigid, and ruggedly jagged, with sharp edges and angles—ideal for creating dramatic, precipitous peaks.

  • Yellow Stone: distinct stratification and a majestic, imposing presence, often used to mimic natural cliffs and rocky outcrops.
