The ancient temple site of Ur, a pivotal city-state in southern Mesopotamia, was located near Nasiriyah in Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate, along the southern reaches of the Euphrates River. The city first emerged around 5500 BCE during the Ubaid period and developed into a fully organized urban system by 3500 BCE.
