3D-printed miniature of a D&D harpy. The figure stands on a rocky base, which is part of a larger, round platform. The creature has a humanoid female torso with exposed skin and pronounced muscle definition. Its lower body and legs are that of a bird of prey, ending in sharp talons gripping the rocks. Large, detailed wings with layers of sculpted feathers extend from its back, and a menacing avian head with a beak and sharp eyes tops the figure.
3D Printing and Painting Details
For Resin 3D Printers (Recommended)
- Resin Type: Standard Gray or Navy Gray UV Curing Resin. Using a gray resin helps in seeing small details before painting.
- Layer Height: 0.03mm - 0.05mm. A finer layer height will capture the intricate feather and muscle textures.
- Supports: The model comes pre-supported, but it's recommended to check for any missed islands and add a few extra supports in key areas like the wingtips and talons for stability.
- Curing:
- Rinse thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove uncured resin.
- Use an air compressor or paper towel to dry the model completely.
- Cure the model in a UV curing station. Avoid over-curing, which can make the resin brittle.
- Post-Processing:
- Carefully snip off supports with flush cutters.
- Gently sand or file any small blemishes or support marks.
- Wash the model with soap and water to remove any residual oils before priming.
Painting
- Primer: A thin, uniform coat of black or gray primer is essential for good paint adhesion.
- Paints: Use acrylic hobby paints (e.g., Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter).
- Technique:
- Start with base coats for each area (skin, feathers, hair, rocks).
- Use a wash or "shade" paint (e.g., Agrax Earthshade, Nuln Oil) to create depth and shadow in the recesses of the skin, feathers, and rocks.
- Apply dry brushing or layering for highlights on raised areas, such as the muscles, the tips of the feathers, and the edges of the rocks.
- Use fine detail brushes for the eyes, beak, and talons.
- Final Coat: Apply a matte or satin varnish to protect the paint job from chipping and handling.
