Ender 5 Direct Drive Sherpa Mount
Introduction:
This project is about installing a direct drive Sherpa extruder kit in Ender 5. The Sherpa extruder and the slim stepper motor are very light (approx. 155 grams). It looks and prints beautifully.
There are many different direct drive mounts for Ender 5 in Thingverse. However, after learning about the Sherpa, I was pretty sure that I wanted it in my Ender 5. I wanted, also, an all metal hotend, same offset of the original hotend (to keep the original printable bed size), powerful blowers, silence, and nice look. Since nothing in Thingverse would meet all these goals, I decided to design and adjust some parts already available.
I had in my Ender 5 the Hero Me 5 bowden mount. It worked very well. One thing that I did not like about it was losing about 10mm in the Y axis. Luckily, I found an adapted Hero Me 5 base in Thingverse that solved this problem. I made further modifications to it to better organize the cables and facilitate its printing.
The Sherpa mount was made for an Ender 3. I adjusted it to fit the Ender 5, its finishing and cable organization.
If you use only one fan (4020 or 5010) on the left side, you can install BLT touch. The Hero Me 5 base includes an adapter for the BLT touch. If you use two fans this setup will not have room enough for the BLT touch. Despite having the BLT touch in one machine, I do not miss it in my other machines. I prefer two fans.
I printed the parts with PETG at layer height of 0.20 and 40% density. Mediaman, author of Hero Me 5, says that you may use PLA, if you put on socks on the hotend. My previous mount was printed with PLA+ and using socks I hadn´t any problem at all.
I included supported STLs of the 4020 duct fans. I found that they print good in the suggested position. You need to add additional support with your slicing program (everywhere – i.e., not only from build plate). I suggest having the support at 90º of the printing direction. Check your preview mode for such purpose.
Look at the included PDF and photos (files section) to help on the assemblage.
