Summary

Organize and store your resistors in this neat stackable drawer box. Each drawer had 3 compartments with a length of 6 cm (2.45 inch) that are fit for standard trough-hole resistors. You can stack as many boxes as you need using the connectors. The drawers will not fall out if you open them.

Everything is easy to print, without supports, although to make it fit nicely you need a decent printer, and the standard handle on the drawers expect some 'bridging' from your printer (turn part cooling fan on for PLA). The Thin Handle does not require bridging.

It was specifically designed to be printed at layer height of 0.2 mm, and layer width of 0.48 mm (standard for 0.4mm nozzles). Although it will probably print OK in other settings.

I also included a word-document that you can print, containing labels of the correct sizes for the E-12 resistor values from 10 Ohm to 1 M-Ohm. Feel free to edit them :)
A glue stick is suggested for keeping the labels in place, although it is not strictly necessary.

For stacking, you need to print the right versions of the boxes. The names of the STL files should speak for themselves and tell you where in the array that box will fit. If you are unsure about the final stacking, consider using BoxMiddleMiddle.stl, this can connect on all sides.

UPDATE 1: This thing is now fully customizable. Make storage boxes of your own specifications using the Thingiverse Customizer, or by editing the .scad file. Have fun!

UPDATE 2:

  • Added an 'empty drawer' on request (STL).
  • These empty drawers, and other custom drawers, can also be created using the customizer.
  • Added a new type of handle for the drawers (thin handle).
  • Added word-document with labels for the thin handle drawers.
  • Fixed an issue when the walls in the drawers could get stuck on the drawer stoppers.

UPDATE 3:

  • Fixed the width of the normal handle to correctly adjust for drawer width.

UPDATE 4:

  • Fixed an issue where the customizer rendered correctly, but would give an error when trying to create a derived thing.
  • Fixed issue with handles on very small drawers.

UPDATE 5:

  • Added 'custom sized box' to the customizer. Create resistor boxes with a specified final size!

UPDATE 6:

  • Check out this nice label generator for these boxes created by ArnieO (https://www.thingiverse.com/ArnieO/about). Download the excel file here: https://www.thingiverse.com/asset:132138. See example here: https://www.thingiverse.com/make:596786.

UPDATE 7:

  • Fixed an issue with the drawers being made out of several shells, they are single shell now, easier for slicers. All drawer STL files have been re-uploaded.
  • Recreated 'drawer shrink' tolerance setting. the TOLERANT drawers use 0.2mm on this setting. Also changed the behavior on this setting, will no longer shrink the front of the drawer.
  • Fixed the width of the labels in the word files.
  • Added affiliate links for cheap resistors. Thanks to oliver_midbrink (https://www.thingiverse.com/oliver_midbrink/about) for the idea!

UPDATE 8:

  • Added some links to useful user created derivatives and extended label document.

UPDATE 9:

  • Fixed custom box size so the height will be exactly as specified. This may slightly increase the vertical spacing between drawers in some cases.

Post-Printing

If the drawer doesn't fit well, try (gently) forcing it in and out a few times to see if that results in a better slide (worked for me). If the fit is still poor, print the TOLERANT version of the drawer. Same for the connector: if you really can't get it in, try the TOLERANT version.

For stacking, I recommend placing the printed boxes face down in the right configuration (without the drawers), and pushing in the connectors in from above. I used the back of a big screwdriver to gently hammer them in. This was a nice strong fit for me. You could use some glue on the connector if it's too lose.
