This queen bee protector is designed for the temporary protection and separation of queen bees, particularly newly hatching (virgin) queens, directly inside the hive.
Unlike a traditional cage, this design features open spike-style bars on one end, allowing worker bees to move freely around and over the protector while preventing direct access to the queen inside. This ensures excellent airflow, pheromone circulation, and feeding access, while stopping aggressive contact from other queens or workers.
It is especially useful during queen rearing, where newly emerged queens must be kept separated to prevent fighting until they can be safely removed or managed.
🔧 How It Works
- The protector is placed over or around a queen cell or newly emerged queen
- The spiked open structure allows worker bees to:
- Feed the queen
- Sense her pheromones
- Maintain normal hive activity
- Other queens are physically blocked from entering and fighting
- The queen can later be safely released or transferred
This design mimics common commercial queen cell protectors, adapted for easy and reliable 3D printing.
