Description:
This is a practical, print-in-place control knob designed with an integrated M5 socket head cap screw ISO 4762 (or similar DIN 912) channel and a removable cover. It solves a specific problem: sometimes, you need a knob to be fastened from the front, not the back.
The Story Behind This Design:
I've encountered many situations where a traditional knob couldn't be used because there was no access to the back of a panel or drawer to tighten a screw. Standard 3D printed knobs are often designed to be screwed onto a threaded shaft from the rear, but what if the mechanism is on the other side? This model was created to address that very issue. It allows you to use a standard M5 screw, push it through the knob, and screw it directly into the body of the object you are controlling.
Why This Model Is Different:
- Front-Facing Fastening: The core design allows an M5 screw (ISO 4762, or similar) to be inserted from the front, making it perfect for applications where you cannot access the back of a panel.
- Clean, Concealed Look: The head of the screw sits inside the knob. An included, press-fit plug covers the screw head, giving the knob a clean, professional appearance.
- Serviceable Design: The plug can be gently pried out using a sharp tool (like a small screwdriver or knife), allowing you to remove or tighten the M5 screw as needed without destroying the knob.
- Versatile Application: Ideal for use on drawers, cabinet doors, furniture, machines, tools, levers, and anywhere a secure, front-mounted grip is required.
Design & Functionality:
- The knob has a conical/tapered shape for a comfortable and secure grip.
- The channel is sized for an M5 socket head cap screw. The head fits flush within the knob body.
- The included plug is designed to snap into place, concealing the screw head. It can be removed for servicing with care.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNINGS – PLEASE READ BEFORE PRINTING ⚠️
- For Makers of All Levels: This is a simple and straightforward print. Print-in-place functionality means the knob and plug are separate parts but print without assembly.
- Plug Removal: The plug is designed to be a tight fit. To remove it, use a sharp, pointed tool to gently pry it from the edge. Do this carefully to avoid injury or damaging the plug or the knob.
- Screw Selection: Ensure you are using an M5 socket head cap screw (ISO 4762) or a similar screw type. The length of the screw will depend on the thickness of the material you are fastening it into.
Print Settings:
- Material: PETG, PLA, ABS/ASA are all suitable. Consider PETG for higher durability and heat resistance in demanding applications.
- Infill: 10–50%
- Supports: No.
- Brim: No.
- Walls: 2 or more.
- Note: The knob and plug are separate parts to be printed individually. No assembly is required for the main body; simply insert the screw and push in the plug.
Have a Suggestion?
Do you need a different size (e.g., M4, M6)? A different knob shape (e.g., round, star)? Or a different style of cover? Please share your ideas in the comments! I'm always looking to improve and adapt these practical tools.
