Want to use gears to draw? Meet the geometric toy—the spirograph. Through the meshing and transmission of gears,

a simple pen can create endlessly varied and intricate patterns, making it both relaxing and fun.

Here’s a concise guide to help you get started:

💡 Key Highlights

  • The fusion of mechanics and art: By combining gears with different numbers of teeth, you can produce a wide array of complex geometric designs. The process is straightforward yet offers limitless creative possibilities.

  • Learning through play: While having fun, children can intuitively grasp mechanical principles such as gear ratios, meshing, and power transmission, making it an excellent educational tool.

  • Low cost and quick to master: Almost any design can be printed in about 1.5 hours, using very little material—some models require only around 32 grams of filament. Once printing is complete, all you need is a pen and some paper to start creating.

🛠️ Printing Guide

  • Material selection: PLA is sufficient for most applications and delivers excellent print quality. If you want smoother gear rotation and more durable parts, consider using PETG.

  • Key settings: We recommend a layer height of 0.2 mm, 2 wall layers, and a infill of 15–20%. No additional supports or raft are needed.

🧩 Assembly and Play

Assembly is very simple. Let’s take the most common spirograph as an example:

  1. Secure the base: Place the gear ring base on a sheet of paper.

  2. Add the gears: Select a gear and insert it into the gear ring, making sure the gear teeth mesh perfectly with the ring.

  3. Position the pen tip: Insert the pen tip into the designated hole on the gear.

  4. Start drawing: Hold the base steady and use the pen to rotate the gear around the inner wall of the gear ring. In no time, a complex pattern will emerge!
