I’ve conducted precision measurements and can confidently say that, while 3D printing is a viable option for certain applications, it falls short when it comes to producing highly accurate inspection tools. Setting aside other factors, the inherent variations between different 3D printers and material properties—such as shrinkage—simply make it challenging to achieve consistent accuracy across all prints. Among the hundreds of inspection tools and measuring devices I’ve worked with, the universal angle ruler stands out as one of the few that can be reliably produced via 3D printing while still maintaining a reasonable level of precision—specifically in terms of angular measurement along the circumferential axis, where deviations caused by equipment tolerances and material differences have minimal impact.
