The Fireflash missile was the United Kingdom’s first air-to-air missile, employing radar beam guidance. It was primarily designed to counter large propeller‑powered bombers, though its effectiveness has diminished in modern aerial combat.

Development Background

Development of the Fireflash missile began in 1949, with design work carried out by Fairey Aviation in the UK. The missile underwent its first test launch in 1953 and was officially commissioned in 1957. As the Royal Air Force’s first air-to-air missile, it was primarily intended to engage propeller‑driven bombers—but proved less effective against agile jet fighters.
