The AIM-7 air-to-air missile (English: AIM-7 air-to-air missile, nicknamed “Sparrow,” meaning “sparrow”) is a U.S.-developed medium‑range radar‑guided, semi‑active homing air-to-air missile. The AIM-7 boasts all‑weather, omnidirectional engagement capabilities and was once extensively deployed across the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps aviation units. It was also exported to numerous NATO countries and adopted by air forces and naval air wings worldwide. Development of the AIM-7 began in 1946, and its various upgraded variants served as the primary beyond‑visual‑range (BVR) air combat weapon for Western nations from the late 1950s through the 1990s, seeing widespread use in conflicts. As the next generation of BVR air-to-air missiles—the AIM-120—entered service, the AIM-7 was gradually retired.
