Traditional Origins
Instrument: A percussion instrument used in Buddhist and Taoist chanting to unify the rhythm and awaken the mind.
Design: Typically a wooden fish carving, hollowed out in the middle and paired with a wooden mallet. Legend has it that the fish never closes its eyes, day or night, so the fish-shaped design serves as a reminder for everyone to strive diligently in practice and never slack off.
Symbolism: In traditional practice, striking the instrument is considered part of spiritual cultivation, associated with warding off calamity, accumulating virtue, and calming the mind.
