Song Dynasty hairpins are a classic type of ancient Chinese hair ornament. Building on the craftsmanship of earlier dynasties, they developed a distinctive style that combines practicality with aesthetic appeal.

Functions and Uses

Song Dynasty hairpins served to secure headgear, tie up hairstyles, and provide decoration. For men, hairpins were primarily used for securing headgear; for women, in addition to their role in styling hair, the widespread practice of wearing crowns during the Song period led to the emergence of long hairpins specifically designed to hold crowns in place. At the same time, women’s hairpins also featured highly elaborate decorative designs.
