Ferdinand Magellan – Bust
🇫🇷 Description (French)
This bust depicts Fernão de Magalhães, known in French as Fernand de Magellan, a 16th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer renowned for leading the first expedition to achieve the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
Serving the Spanish Crown, Magellan embarked in 1519 on an ambitious voyage aimed at reaching the Spice Islands by sailing westward. This expedition led to the discovery of the passage connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, now known as the Strait of Magellan. This breakthrough marked a major turning point in the history of navigation and global exploration.
Although Magellan did not complete the journey himself—he was killed in 1521 during a clash in the Philippines—the expedition was continued by his crew and ultimately completed by the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who successfully accomplished the first full circumnavigation of the globe. This historic feat concretely confirmed the immense scale of the oceans and the true size of the planet.
This bust is inspired by the most widely recognized historical depiction of the explorer, as portrayed in the most famous historical portraits. The sculpted face features pronounced contours and a resolute expression, evoking the adventurous spirit and determination of a navigator facing the unknown. The characteristic beard and hairstyle reflect the traditional iconography associated with Magellan, while the dignified posture underscores the figure’s timeless historical significance.
This sculptural interpretation pays tribute to one of history’s great explorers, whose voyage profoundly transformed humanity’s understanding of the world and the oceans.
