  • Sakazaki Ryo

Sakazaki Ryo is the protagonist of SNK’s (now SNK PLAYMORE) fighting game series “The King of Fighters,” and also appears as a fictional character in the “Fatal Fury” series and the “The King of Fighters” series.

Sakazaki Ryo is a Japanese American living in the United States. Born in Japan, he was brought to America at the age of eight and grew up in South Town—a neighborhood notorious for its rampant street fighting. His father was the founder of Kyokushin Karate; from an early age, Ryo studied Kyokushin Karate (though Ryo himself had a rather gentle disposition and believed that martial arts could harm others, so he never truly embraced the discipline with great enthusiasm). When Ryo was ten, his parents were involved in a car accident: his mother passed away, and his father suffered severe injuries. It was then that Ryo began to harbor deep resentment toward his own helplessness. After his father disappeared, Ryo and his younger sister, Yuri, were left to fend for themselves. To support their family, Ryo started competing in underground fighting tournaments. Over time, Ryo transformed from a kind-hearted youth into a seasoned fighter—forging the “Shura Fist” through sheer willpower and a compassionate heart, earning the title “The Invincible Dragon.” He has a laid‑back personality, is patient with others, and approaches everything with diligence and perseverance. Ryo views physical strength as a means of protecting himself and his loved ones, but he does not advocate reckless or senseless combat. The motorcycle he abandoned in his youth has since become one of his most treasured possessions. He shares a close bond with the rancher of South Town and often rides horseback to unwind. Ryo is skilled in household chores—he can mend clothes, craft furniture, and even tend to a small vegetable garden where he enjoys growing vegetables and fruits. While he’s not particularly fond of music, he often listens to his younger sister sing.
