The Liangzhu Culture Altar Site is a vital component of the Liangzhu Civilization, serving as a key ceremonial and ritual space for the early Liangzhu people. To date, multiple altars have been discovered, with the Yaoshan Altar and Huiguan Mountain Altar being the most representative.
The Yaoshan Altar Site is located atop Yaoshan Peak in Xiaxiwan, Yuhang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. First unearthed and excavated in 1987, the site dates to approximately 3000–2800 BCE. Built into the northwest slope of Yaoshan, the altar largely consists of gently sloping terraces, with an overall plan that is slightly rectangular—its summit forms a perfect square covering roughly 400 square meters. The altar contains 13 tombs arranged in two parallel rows running north–south, yielding over 1,100 individual artifacts (or artifact groups), with 90% of these items crafted from jade. The grave goods vary significantly among the tombs, reflecting differences in the occupants’ gender and social status. The Yaoshan Cemetery served as the family burial ground for the elite class of the Liangzhu Culture; the integration of the altar and cemetery suggests that religious rituals may have been performed during the burial process.
