On April 20, 2025, China’s AG600 “Kunlong” civil amphibious aircraft successfully completed rigorous testing and verification, earning its type certificate and officially securing its “birth permit” to enter the market. The Kunlong has also become the largest civil amphibious aircraft in the world by maximum takeoff weight. Its significance is no less than that of China’s Y-20 strategic transport aircraft and C919 narrow-body airliner. In the military domain, the AG600 “Kunlong,” which seamlessly combines both land and water takeoff and landing capabilities, can not only conduct extended patrols over the South China Sea but also provide rapid maritime resupply support for the Chinese Navy’s blue-water fleet. With a maximum practical range of 4,500 kilometers, it can deliver swift “ship-to-shore” or “shore-to-ship” transport services to China’s carrier strike groups over considerable distances. Moreover, thanks to its ability to take off and land on the sea at any time, the AG600 offers unparalleled operational flexibility.
