Modern road and time-trial bikes often use a fixed braze-on front derailleur mount. While convenient, this fixed position can limit chainring compatibility — especially when upgrading to larger chainrings.
This angle adapter shim solves that problem by introducing a small correction angle between the derailleur and the braze-on mount. By shimming the derailleur outward at a slight angle, it can be properly aligned with larger chainrings, preventing mis-shifts and rubbing.
Why It’s Needed
If your frame has a built-in braze-on front derailleur mount, the derailleur position is fixed relative to the frame. With smaller chainrings (50–53T), this typically works fine. However, if you upgrade to oversized chainrings (e.g. 54–56T or larger), the stock derailleur angle may not allow the cage to track the curvature of the chainrings correctly.
Without an adapter, you may experience:
- Difficulty setting correct derailleur height.
- Chain rub when cross-chaining.
- Sluggish or failed upshifts.
This shim restores the proper alignment angle so your drivetrain shifts smoothly again.
Features
- Angle options (1°, 2°, 3°, 4°, 5°, 6° …): select the shim that matches your new chainring size.
- Rule of thumb: each chainring size above your frame’s stock maximum typically requires about 1° of additional shim angle.
- Concave base: matches the curvature of the derailleur tab for a snug fit.
- Recessed size marking: each shim is labeled with its angle, so you’ll always know which one you’ve installed.
- Compact dimensions: 22.8 × 9 mm footprint with dual M4 pass-through holes to match standard braze-on mounts.
- Wedge thickness: ranges from ~2.4 mm to ~4.7 mm depending on angle, maintaining strong clamping force.
Example Use Case
- Stock chainring setup: 53T max with no shim.
- Upgraded setup: Installing a 56T outer ring (3 teeth larger) requires roughly a 3–4° shim so the derailleur cage aligns parallel with the chainring’s curve.
With this shim installed, the derailleur sits correctly and shifting remains precise.
Printing & Installation
- Print flat on its side with sufficient perimeters for strength.
- Material recommendation: PETG or carbon-reinforced nylon for stiffness and durability.
- Install between the braze-on tab and front derailleur mount using the existing M4 hardware.
Summary
This Front Derailleur Braze-On Angle Adapter Shim is a simple but critical solution for riders who push beyond standard chainring sizes. Each degree of shim angle corresponds to roughly one additional tooth size above your bike’s designed maximum chainring, ensuring your front derailleur stays perfectly aligned for smooth, reliable shifting.
