Folpo: Hybrid AI-CAD Wall Lamp (E14)
Folpo is a wall-mounted lamp that blends the organic aesthetics of the deep sea with functional industrial design. This project is the result of a hybrid workflow, utilizing Generative AI for the organic sculpting and parametric CAD for the structural and mechanical engineering.
🛠️ Development Process
Unlike purely AI-generated models that are often unprintable or non-functional, Folpo has undergone a rigorous technical transformation:
- Organic Source & Open Collaboration: The base form was developed with AI assistance to achieve a level of tentacle complexity and skin texture that would typically require hours of manual sculpting.
- Note for Designers: Due to the nature of AI generation, there are some inconsistencies in the placement and symmetry of the tentacles. I have included the Fusion 360 source file with the original meshes. If anyone with advanced sculpting skills (Blender, etc.) wishes to further refine the organic geometry, feel free to do so and share your "remix"!
- Engineering in Autodesk Fusion:
- Scaling & Cleaning: The original mesh was scaled to real-world dimensions and thoroughly cleaned of artifacts.
- E14 Socket Housing: I manually modeled a precise housing for a standard E14 lamp socket.
- Mounting System: I designed the wall-anchor support and the main pole structure from scratch to ensure stability.
- Custom Cable Routing: Instead of fixed internal channels, I designed dedicated 3D-printable clips that snap onto the pole. This allows you to route the cable freely through the tentacles according to your aesthetic preference, then secure it neatly along the vertical structure.
💡 AI as a Creative Tool
This project demonstrates how AI can be a powerful ally: it acts as a "virtual sculptor" providing the raw material, which is then refined and engineered in a CAD environment to become a functional object. It is a starting point that enables creativity while leaving room for human technical refinement.
🚀 Printing and Assembly Notes
- Socket Type: Compatible with E14 bulb sockets.
- Cable Management: Print the included clips to lock the power cord along the pole after routing it through the tentacles.
- Supports: "Tree" (organic) supports are highly recommended for the tentacle curvatures.
- Modularity: The model is strategically sectioned to be printable even on standard-sized build plates. The joints are designed for precise alignment.
