I really liked this model, but it was made with AI and has some obvious artifacts, and so I decided to try my hand at designing it from scratch.
I'm fairly new to 3D modeling software, so I wasn't able to recreate it perfectly just by looking at it, but in the process I believe I've made some changes that make it easier and cheaper to print, and a nicer object overall that prints with no AMS, no supports, and no fussy settings.
Firstly, the changes. Compared to the AI model, my version:
is $0.22 cheaper to print, and takes 12g less filament (but slightly slower due to higher quality settings)
chamfers overhangs to prevent sagging layers
significantly cleans up interior geometry (which will improve the ability to make watertight)
has clean, consistent patterning for myself and other obsessives
Has a plate with holes for use as an actual planter
It is indeed a clean and modern planter and printed with just enough infill in my profile to give it a sense of heft that is generally missing from 3D printed parts.
The first comment on that other model was asking “Does it have holes for use as a planter?” so this version includes a ‘Planter’ plate with holes. I'm not a gardener and don't know anything about drainage, but I just added 3x10mm holes at the bottom via negative parts in the slicer. If that's too much, feel free to scale them down. If it's too little, feel free to scale them up! If I should change them, let me know what I should change them to and I am happy to accommodate. If enough people ask for it, I could also design a coordinating dish to catch the drainage.
It should print nicely in neutral earthy tones and matte colors, but would also likely sing with special filaments. You're probably more creative than I am, so let me know what works well for you.
The typical disclaimer on water tightness is that if printed in PLA this could be watertight for a time, or maybe forever, I honestly don't know, but I've used Alumlite Clearcast resin to make other vases watertight, and because the interior volume on this model is a smooth surface, it should be easy to apply. Those other models that I've clearcast resined frankly haven't existed long enough for me to know if that is a forever solution but more experienced people out there assert that it is, so take that with a bag of salt.
This model should be easily scalable up or down without losing detail. Photos were printed in matte white.
