Deep in a well lived a frog that had never left the bottom since the day it was born. Each day, all it could see was a patch of sky no bigger than the well’s opening—and all it could hear were the echoes bouncing off the well’s walls. To the frog, this was the entire world: the sky stretched only as far as the well’s rim, and life was as shallow as the well’s water.
One day, a massive sea turtle from the East Sea happened to pass by the well’s edge. The frog, brimming with excitement, called out to it, “Brother Turtle, come down and take a look at my home! It’s safe and cozy here—there’s simply no better place in the whole world!”
The sea turtle listened and tried to squeeze its enormous body through the well’s opening, but its bulk was far too large to fit. After a moment, the turtle turned to the frog and said, “Have you ever seen the endless expanse of the ocean? It stretches for tens of thousands of miles and plunges more than a thousand fathoms deep. Whether it’s summer or winter, drought or flood, the ocean’s volume remains remarkably stable. Now look up again—true skies are vast and boundless, capable of holding the sun, the moon, the stars, the winds, the rains, and the thunderstorms—all far grander than the tiny patch of sky above your well!”
The frog was utterly astonished. Leaning against the well’s rim, it gazed upward for the first time at a sky that stretched far beyond the confines of the “well’s mouth.” Only then did it finally realize: it had been living in a narrow little world, yet had foolishly believed that this was the whole universe. From that day forward, it never again dared to boast that it understood the entire world.
