  1. Subject Matter & Background:

    • The sculpture draws inspiration from Greek mythology: Laocoon, a Trojan priest who warned the Trojans to beware of the Greek wooden horse, incurred the wrath of the gods and was strangled to death by giant serpents—his two sons were also tragically caught in the same fate.

  2. Artistic Characteristics:

    • At its core, the work captures the dynamic “struggle in agony,” vividly conveying intense dramatic tension and tragic poignancy through taut muscles, contorted limbs, and the serpent’s relentless coils.

    • A quintessential example of ancient Greek Baroque sculpture, it elevates motion and emotion to their most profound expressions.
