Screen walls were historically known as “door screens,” with the earliest extant examples dating back to the Fengchu Early Zhou site in Qishan County, Shaanxi Province. According to pre-Qin historical records, imperial door screens were erected outside the main gate, while those of feudal lords were placed inside. Tang Dynasty sources mention screen walls, and excavated Tang-era residential funerary artifacts also include such features. Song Dynasty paintings depict screen walls both inside and outside the main gate, while numerous surviving examples date from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
