Tyrannosaurus rex roamed North America during the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous, roughly 68–66 million years ago, and is one of the last dinosaurs to go extinct. The genus name Tyrannosaurus translates to “tyrant lizard,” while the species name rex derives from Latin, meaning “king”—together, the name literally means “the king of fierce lizards.” As of 2023, only one species is recognized within this genus: Tyrannosaurus rex.
