Here is a short description of this custom AKAI 180mm Reel and mNAB Holder set:
This project combines a classic aesthetic with a custom-engineered upgrade for 7-inch reel-to-reel recorders like the AKAI GX-4000D.
- The Reel (180mm): A modern re-imagining of the classic AKAI spool. It features a geometric 6-spoke design with large trapezoidal cutouts and the iconic "AKAI" logo prominently displayed at the top. The 180mm (7-inch) diameter is the standard size for consumer decks, optimized here for 3D printing.
- The mNAB Holder: A custom-designed "Mini NAB" adapter. This clever device fits over the standard trident spindle, mimicking the look of professional 10.5-inch NAB hubs but scaled down for 7-inch reels. It provides a secure grip and adds a rugged, studio-grade appearance to the machine.
- The Look: When combined, the matte black reel and the contrasting (red/black) mNAB hub transform the visual profile of the tape deck, giving it a more "heavy-duty" and customized mechanical look.
