Pikachu is an Electric-type mouse Pokémon with a vibrant yellow coat, adorned with two distinct brown stripes running down its back. Its tail resembles a jagged lightning bolt, seamlessly blending into the body with a patch of brown fur at its base. Pikachu sports a small, rounded muzzle and dark, expressive eyes, while its cheeks are home to red “power pouches” that store electrical energy—touching these pouches can leave a tingling sensation. When it dashes across the field, Pikachu propels itself forward on all four legs, moving swiftly and nimbly; however, more often than not, it stands upright, using its hind legs to walk with remarkable agility. Female Pikachu’s tail ends in a heart-shaped tip, whereas male Pikachu’s tail lacks this distinctive notch. The luster of Pikachu’s fur varies subtly depending on its region of origin: in the Kanto region, Pikachu’s coat shimmers with tiny, star-like highlights under the sunlight, while Pikachu from the Alola region boasts a sleek, glossy sheen. In Massive Appearances! Pikachu Valley!!, Pikachu’s unique trait helps Pikachurra identify Ash’s Pikachu as hailing from the Kanto region.

Costume Pikachu is unmistakably female—though it closely resembles a standard female Pikachu, its tail end features a striking black heart-shaped pattern. What’s more, Costume Pikachu can transform into five different outfits, each representing a distinct costume while leaving Pikachu’s core form unchanged. However, in the animated series, Costume Pikachu is not bound by gender restrictions. Pikachu wearing a hat is always male—and unlike regular Pikachu, it sports a signature hat worn by Ash at various points throughout the anime and films. In The Strongest Z-Move in Alola! Tapu Bulu vs. Pikachu!!, Pikachu donning Ash’s iconic hat channels 100,000 Volts into a special Z-Move: 10 Million Volts. Meanwhile, during in-game promotional events, it was none other than Ash who first trained Pikachu wearing these eight distinctive hats.

After Mega Evolution, Pikachu’s physique begins to mirror that of the chubby, stocky Pikachu from the First Generation. The surging power of Mega Evolution causes Pikachu’s body to swell, its tail towering high into the sky. All the electrical energy stored within its cheek pouches is now channeled into the tail, which becomes increasingly intricate with additional twists and turns. The three brown stripes along its back also grow to become five distinct lines.

Pikachu is a forest-dwelling Pokémon, living in harmony with its kin in dense woodlands. When Pikachu presses its tails together to exchange electrical currents, it’s essentially a way of greeting one another—or, in some cases, of bestowing a gentle electric shock upon a weakened companion, sharing its own energy to help them recover. Pikachu is remarkably intelligent; it uses electricity to zap objects it encounters for the first time, softening tough fruits with a jolt before enjoying them. If a charred fruit falls from a tree, it’s a clear sign that Pikachu may have miscalculated the intensity of its electrical discharge. Pikachu stores its electrical energy in the power pouches on either side of its cheeks—and when danger looms, it unleashes a powerful surge of electricity. When Pikachu’s cheeks crackle with bursts of energy, it’s a signal that it’s on high alert, scanning its surroundings with its tail held aloft to assess whether the area is safe. Occasionally, lightning strikes the tip of its tail as it surveys the landscape. If you dare to tug on its tail, you’ll likely find yourself bitten—a reminder that Pikachu’s power is both a gift and a formidable force. The electrical energy stored in its cheek pouches seems to accumulate overnight while Pikachu sleeps; if it doesn’t get enough rest, it can only release a faint spark, and sometimes, in its drowsy state, it might even drain its entire battery. But when Pikachu summons its full power in one swift burst, it can unleash enough electricity to summon a thunderstorm. Pikachu has a natural tendency to hoard energy—and if it doesn’t release that stored power regularly, it can feel weighed down by stress. It’s said that when several Pikachus gather together, their collective energy builds to such a potent level that lightning frequently crashes down around them, making the forest a dangerous place. By using a Thunder Stone, Pikachu can evolve into Raichu—but some Pikachus seem to resist the urge to evolve into Raichu altogether. [1]

Pikachu and its family are the only Pokémon capable of learning Volt Tackle. Certain Pikachu can even master water control, using a surfboard to ride the waves with Surfing. Some Pikachus can also learn to soar through the skies using balloons, executing Flight. Pikachu possesses its very own signature item—the Electro Ball. This item boosts Pikachu’s Attack and Special Attack, and if you entrust a Pikachu equipped with this item to a Breeding House, the baby Pikachu hatched from the egg will inherit the ability to learn Volt Tackle.

As a pet, Pikachu can be fed a wide variety of processed foods. Like most Pokémon, Pikachu tolerates many human-made foods—and in some cases, if those foods are specially crafted to suit its taste, it may even prefer them over natural fare. For example, Ash’s Pikachu has a particular fondness for ketchup.

During battles, Mega-Evolved Pikachu wields its tail like a mighty club, delivering devastating blows to opponents. When its lightning‑shaped tail strikes a target, the voltage and current unleashed are no less than a full-blown lightning strike, coursing through the opponent’s entire body. Its power generation capabilities are dramatically enhanced, allowing it to produce electrical energy on a scale rivaling that of a modern power plant. Yet the Mega-Evolution state is fleeting—lasting only a brief moment—making it difficult to harness this immense power for everyday use. [2]
