Ce buste représente Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, plus connu en Occident sous le nom de Saladin, dans une interprétation sculpturale fidèle inspirée de l’iconographie la plus répandue le représentant. Le visage calme et réfléchi, encadré par une barbe longue et structurée ainsi qu’un couvre-chef caractéristique, traduit la sagesse et la retenue associées à sa figure historique.

Les volumes sont volontairement marqués afin de rendre lisibles les traits essentiels : le regard profond, le nez affirmé et la structure verticale du visage. Le travail privilégie une lecture claire et équilibrée adaptée à la sculpture tout en conservant la personnalité et l’asymétrie naturelle du modèle.

🏛️ Le personnage

Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (1137-1193) fut le fondateur de la dynastie ayyoubide et l’un des dirigeants majeurs du Moyen-Orient médiéval. Il est surtout connu pour avoir repris Jérusalem en 1187 durant les Croisades, tout en restant célèbre pour son sens de l’honneur et sa réputation de chef respecté par ses alliés comme par ses adversaires.

Ce buste cherche ainsi à retranscrire l’image devenue emblématique du souverain chevaleresque, telle que transmise par les représentations historiques les plus populaires.

🏛️ The historical figure

Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (1137-1193) founded the Ayyubid dynasty and became one of the most important leaders of the medieval Middle East. He is best known for recapturing Jerusalem in 1187 during the Crusades and for his reputation as an honorable leader respected by both allies and enemies.
