Woolgrim was never found in the forest.
He was found in the nursery.
Sitting quietly on a shelf, wrapped in soft white fluff, he looked almost lovable — like a shy little lamb dressed for winter. His round purple hood, bright red buttons, and tiny bell made him seem harmless. Sweet, even.
But no one could explain the black face beneath the fleece.
Or the eyes.
Those eyes never looked frightened.
They looked hungry.
At first, Woolgrim only moved in small ways. A different angle on the shelf. Tiny hoofprints — or were they paw prints? — near the bedroom door. A faint bell sound in the hallway long after midnight, soft enough to make you wonder if you had imagined it.
Then came the whispers.
Children said the “lamb” spoke to them when the lights were out. Not in words exactly, but in little thoughts that didn’t feel like their own:
Open the window.
Unlock the door.
Let me out.
The strange thing was, Woolgrim never seemed cruel. He never growled. Never attacked. He simply watched with perfect patience, as if he knew that sooner or later, everyone lets their guard down around something soft.
That was his gift.
Because Woolgrim was not a monster pretending to be cute.
He was a warning pretending to be safe.
And if you ever hear a tiny bell ring from an empty room, do not go looking for a lost lamb.
Because if Woolgrim is in your house, it means he has already come in wearing the shape of something you trusted.
