Moai (Giant Statues of Easter Island)

The Moai are colossal stone statues carved by the Rapa Nui people of Chile’s Rapa Nui Island (Easter Island) between AD 1250 and 1500. Serving as monuments to ancestral veneration, they stand on coastal stone platforms called Ahu, typically facing inland settlements with their backs turned toward the sea. The figures are primarily sculpted from tuff rock quarried at Rano Raraku, featuring characteristic traits such as elongated faces, deep eye sockets, high noses, long ears, and arms draped across the abdomen. Some statues bear a red volcanic‑stone headdress known as a Pukao, weighing several tons. A total of 962 statues have been documented, averaging about 4 meters in height, with the heaviest reaching up to 86 tons; most remain unfinished at the quarries or toppled during transport. Ancient builders employed ropes, wooden levers, and a “rocking‑walking” technique to move these massive sculptures. Overexploitation of timber and internal tribal conflicts ultimately led to the decline of the civilization, resulting in many statues being knocked over. Today, the Moai are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are under strict protection.
