Connect Four, also known as Four in a Row, is a classic two-player strategy board game with simple rules that are quick to learn yet offer deep strategic complexity.

I. Game Components

  • Board: A standard vertical grid measuring 7 columns × 6 rows, for a total of 42 spaces.
  • Pieces: Each player uses one color—typically red and yellow—with 21 pieces per color.

II. Basic Rules

  1. Placement Method
    • Players take turns, dropping one piece at a time from the top of the board into any column.
    • The piece falls under gravity to the lowest available space in that column.
    • Once a column is filled with six pieces, no more can be dropped into it.
  2. Winning Condition: The first player to align four of their pieces in any direction wins immediately:
    • Horizontal: Four consecutive pieces in the same row.
    • Vertical: Four consecutive pieces in the same column.
    • Diagonal: Four consecutive pieces along a diagonal running from upper left to lower right or from upper right to lower left.
  3. Draw: If the board is completely filled without either player achieving a four-in-a-row, the game ends in a draw.

III. Simple Gameplay Flow

  1. Decide who goes first and second, then take turns placing pieces.
  2. In each turn, you may place only one piece at the top of a single column.
  3. The first player to form a line of four wins; if the board fills up, the game is a draw.
