Father’s Day Special Feature | Give Dad a “Time‑Preserving Gramophone” with 3D Printing

Following up on our last announcement of the second installment in our creative desktop ornament series, today we’re finally sharing the finished piece! And this time, I’ve even sneaked in a little Father’s Day surprise ✨—this isn’t just another vintage‑style decoration; it’s a heartfelt gift that can sit on Dad’s desk, allowing him to savor the passage of time at his own pace.

🎵 Introducing the Retro Gramophone Coaster Set

(5 × 12 cm record coasters + a gramophone storage base)

The inspiration for this design came from the old radio in Dad’s study and the stack of vinyl records he’s been using for decades. I believe that “sound” is a vessel of memory, and the “gramophone” itself is a kind of time machine, capturing and preserving the melodies of days gone by.

So I’ve miniaturized it into a functional desktop companion:

  • Vinyl records transformed into coasters: Five “vinyl discs” actually serve as heat‑insulating, non‑slip coasters. When Dad brews tea or enjoys coffee, simply set his cup down, and the base becomes a “record.”
  • The gramophone doubles as a storage base: With its retro blue body, metal tonearm, and orange turntable, when not in use, the five coasters neatly nestle inside the “turntable,” turning the whole piece back into a complete gramophone ornament.

It’s just like Dad’s presence—always quietly standing by your side, ready to gently catch you whenever you need it.

🛠️ My Printing Notes & Color‑Matching Tips for Dad

For this print, my main concern was how to make it both visually appealing and durable for Dad.

  • Printer: Creality K1 Max (a large, stable base is key)
  • Materials: Here’s the highlight!
    • The base (body): I chose Elegoo’s PETG in metallic blue. The printed result has a matte, substantial metallic texture, reminiscent of the finish on vintage machines. Dad loves things that feel solid and refined—this color will definitely win his approval!
    • The “turntable” and coasters: I used standard bright orange PLA, creating a striking contrast that instantly amps up the retro vibe.
  •

“Color is a personalized touch for Dad”— beyond the blue‑and‑gold palette I selected, consider what might suit his taste:

  • If he prefers understated elegance, try an imitation wood look in walnut brown + antique bronze.
  • If he’s a classic gentleman, the timeless combination of dark green + off‑white may be just right.
  • In short, the colors you choose are your sweet interpretation of his personality. 😉

  3. Dark green and off‑white (classic gentlemanly flair)
  4. Other ideas (your unique creativity!)

Next Up: More Father’s Day fun ahead! I’m already sketching out the next installment, where we’ll explore “Using 3D Printing to Restore Dad’s Beloved Old Items”—perhaps that broken eyeglass frame or those cherished old tools he can’t bear to part with. Do you have any old treasures you’d like to help Dad preserve? Share them in the comments—maybe they’ll become the theme of my next design!

Happy printing—and wishing all the coolest dads around the world a very happy Father’s Day!
