Introduction to the 3D-Printed Thermal Paper Rewinder Model

Design Rationale

Thermal paper is available in large rolls at a cost-effective price, but small rolls are expensive and offer poor value for money. To make full use of large rolls while ensuring compatibility with my compact printer, I designed this practical thermal paper rewinder. It effortlessly divides a large roll into smaller rolls, maximizing material utilization and reducing expenses.

Core Features and Design Highlights

1. Flexible Rewinding: Place the large roll of thermal paper on a thicker cylindrical core, and position a smaller spool on a thinner core. Pull out the paper, secure the leading edge to the spool, and then close the limit stop cover to prevent the paper from shifting during rewinding.
2. Precise Control: The spool base is equipped with scale markings, allowing users to stop rewinding at the desired position. Based on the dimensions of your printer, mark the appropriate thickness with a marker pen to ensure that the rewound paper fits perfectly in the printer.
3. Adjustable Tightness: If the paper seems too loose, hold the large roll steady with your left hand and manually tighten the spindle to ensure a snug wrap, thereby preventing paper jams or uneven feeding during printing.
4. Convenient Cutting: After rewinding, you can either use the serrated cutter on the tool to trim the paper or simply tear it by hand. After all, the first sheet is usually discarded anyway, and the remaining half can be conveniently reattached to the spool for the next rewinding—both practical and efficient.
5. Multiple Spool Sizes: The design file includes spools in heights of 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm, catering to different user needs and compatible with various small thermal printers.
6. Thoughtful Clamp Design: Each rewound roll comes with a matching clamp to secure the paper, preventing it from unraveling during storage and handling and keeping the rolls neat and compact. The clamps are also included in the design file for easy, direct use.
7. Versatile Rewinding Options: In addition to manual rewinding using the printed crank handle, the spool can also be connected to electric tools such as a power drill for fast, effortless rewinding, boosting efficiency and saving labor.

Instructions for Use

1. Gather Materials: Large roll of thermal paper, small spools, and a marker pen.
2. Set Up the Rolls: Place the large roll on the thicker cylinder and position the appropriate small spool on the thinner cylinder. Pull out the paper, attach the leading edge to the spool, and close the limit stop cover.
3. Adjust Thickness: Mark the desired thickness on the underside of the spool with a marker pen according to your printer’s dimensions.
4. Rewind the Paper: You can either use the printed crank handle for manual rewinding or connect an electric tool like a power drill to quickly wind the large roll to the marked position, ensuring a tight wrap.
5. Secure with Clamps: Once rewinding is complete, use the provided clamps to secure the rewound rolls and prevent them from coming apart.
6. Cut the Paper: Trim the paper with the serrated cutter on the tool or simply tear it by hand.

Printing Recommendations

1. Material Selection: We recommend using durable PETG filament to ensure that the spring mechanism provides sufficient friction.
