Rhomaleosaurus, formally known as Rhomaleosaurus and also referred to as the “stout lizard,” lived during the Early Jurassic period, approximately 200 million years ago. It was an early short-necked plesiosaur and a formidable marine carnivore. This reptile measured 5 to 7 meters in length, with a broad skull, a thick yet short neck, and limbs that had evolved into flippers, enabling it to swim exceptionally well. Equipped with sharp fangs, it hunted fish and other marine organisms in coastal waters. Fossils of Rhomaleosaurus are primarily found in European marine strata, making it one of the top predators of the early Jurassic oceans and dominating shallow seas before the rise of pliosaurs.
