Chameleons, scientifically known as Chamaeleonidae, are reptiles belonging to the family Chamaeleonidae. Most species inhabit African rainforests and shrublands, with a few found in Southern Europe and Western Asia. They possess a distinctive appearance: their eyes can rotate independently, enabling them to observe their surroundings in all directions; their tails can wrap around branches to stabilize their bodies; and their tongues, which extend far beyond their bodies, can rapidly snap out to capture insects. Their remarkable ability to change color serves not only for camouflage but also for regulating body temperature and conveying emotions, achieved through changes in the crystalline structures of their skin. Chameleons move slowly and spend most of their lives arboreal, feeding primarily on various small insects. Today, many chameleon species are kept as ornamental pets; however, habitat destruction has pushed some wild populations to the brink of endangerment.
