— Suncai Ju: Memphis‑Style Mortise‑and‑Tenon Birdcage

Ancient Joinery, New Colors: Building a Home for Birds

The “Suncai Ju” project represents a cross‑disciplinary dialogue between traditional Chinese mortise‑and‑tenon craftsmanship and the avant‑garde aesthetics of Memphis design. Centered around the idea of “creating a breathable, growing, colorful little home for birds,” it breaks free from the conventional stereotypes of birdcages. It serves both as a tribute to the meticulous spirit of Eastern architecture—where every joint fits perfectly—and as a contemporary installation piece that employs high‑saturation red, yellow, and blue color clashes and geometric lines as its visual language. In doing so, it transforms pets’ living spaces into miniature ecological landscapes that seamlessly blend practicality, interactivity, and aesthetic tension.

 

A Modern Interpretation of Mortise‑and‑Tenon

1. Nail‑Free Mortise‑and‑Tenon Structure: The entire cage is constructed using a fully modular mortise‑and‑tenon assembly system, requiring no screws—only minimal glue in select areas—to enable easy assembly and disassembly. This approach restores the interlocking logic of traditional wooden architecture, ensuring structural stability while facilitating cleaning, maintenance, and component upgrades. The triangular main frame draws on truss‑like mechanical principles, achieving a delicate balance between lightweight construction and robust support through minimalist lines, offering both stability and visual transparency.
2. Interactive Open/Close Ventilation System: The blue leaf panels on the front feature movable mortise‑and‑tenon pivots that can be freely opened or closed according to season and temperature, promoting air circulation and preventing stuffiness and dampness. When closed, they form a secure shelter, providing birds with a sense of safety and turning ventilation into an adjustable, ingeniously designed interactive experience.

 

Transparent Observation, Vibrant Color

1. Transparent Side Windows: Both sides are crafted from transparent materials, adorned with yellow geometric line patterns forming triangular grid motifs. This design not only carries forward the visual language of Memphis style but also strikes a balance between visibility and privacy. Owners can clearly observe their birds’ movements, while the interior space feels less enclosed, allowing ample natural light to filter in and creating a brighter, more open atmosphere.
2. Multi‑Functional Perching Platform: A yellow platform extends from the front, specially designed as a playful, feeding, and social area for birds. Equipped with a circular doorway that opens and closes freely, it satisfies birds’ innate curiosity and urge to explore and move about, infusing this “little home” with a lively, everyday feel and turning it into a vibrant playground where they can roam and interact.

 

An Extension from Cage to Nature

In terms of color, the design centers on Memphis’s iconic primary triad of red, yellow, and blue: red frames define the overall silhouette, yellow bases and platforms brighten the composition, and cobalt‑blue panels create striking visual focal points. Meanwhile, the transparent side windows soften the impact of these bold colors, lending the design a lively yet orderly character. Whether placed on an indoor windowsill or mounted on outdoor fences and mailboxes, “Suncai Ju” stands out as a vivid chromatic highlight, harmoniously integrating utility, aesthetics, and natural surroundings.

This is more than just a birdcage—it’s a “breathable, colorful mortise‑and‑tenon cottage,” where the warmth of traditional craftsmanship and the dynamism of contemporary design work together to safeguard a small ecological haven.
