The Acropolis of Athens is the most dazzling symbol of ancient Greek civilization. Situated on a limestone hill approximately 150 meters above sea level in central Athens, Greece, it was first constructed during Athens' golden age in the 5th century BC and has stood for over 2,500 years. The term "Acropolis" means "city on a high hill," serving both as an ancient defensive fortress and as a sacred religious site dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. The entire architectural complex follows the natural contours of the hill, with varying elevations and carefully arranged structures. Centered around the Parthenon, it includes iconic buildings such as the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike, collectively representing the pinnacle of ancient Greek architectural artistry. These structures ingeniously combine Doric and Ionic orders while incorporating subtle optical corrections and earthquake-resistant designs, earning them the reputation as a textbook example of classical Western architecture. In 1987, the Acropolis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and continues today to serve as an enduring emblem of Greek civilization and the spirit of Western culture.
